We had a very fast sail from Ludington to Muskegon last Monday the 21st. We have a good idea of what our average speed might be for a passage, and generally speaking we use 5 knots (about 5.75 miles per hour, as a statute mile is 5280 feet and a nautical mile is a little over 6076). Nautical miles are really handy when using paper charts (electronic charts too) as one minute of latitude is one nautical mile. When you travel 60 nm along a line of longitude, you have traveled one degree. Anyway, on our passage to Muskegon, we left the slip in Ludington about 8:30am. 7 hours later we were three miles from the Muskegon pier head, having traveled 44.6 nm.
