We had a very fast sail from Ludington to Muskegon last Monday the 21st.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We have a good idea of what our average speed might be for a passage, and generally speaking we use 5 knots (about 5.75 miles per hour, as a statute mile is 5280 feet and a nautical mile is a little over 6076).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nautical miles are really handy when using paper charts (electronic charts too) as one minute of latitude is one nautical mile. When you travel 60 nm along a line of longitude, you have traveled one degree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anyway, on our passage to Muskegon, we left the slip in Ludington about 8:30am. 7 hours later we were three miles from the Muskegon pier head, having traveled 44.6 nm. That\u2019s an average of almost 6.4 knots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From untying the dock lines in Ludington, to tied up in Muskegon, took only 8.5 hours to cover 51.3 nm. That\u2019s averaging over 6 knots, and that includes going through both marinas slowly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Definitely the fastest we have traveled on Reflection – ever!  And that was the last sail for us of the season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I wrote a post on Facebook that if that fast passage would have happened earlier in the season, it would have been our white whale. We would have strove to repeat it, and we never would have. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We didn\u2019t want to go out and sail again. ( I mean, why really? We went really fast, and it would have just been a day sail).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We rested the next day, and Mary drove up from Ypsilanti on Wednesday and drove us back to get a car from Lansing on Thursday. Since then, we have washed out the anchor locker, and cleaned the chain and rope anchor rode – with all of our anchoring it got pretty silty, sandy and muddy, as it had a bit of a pong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We cleaned the deck, washed out the dinghy, visited with some friends that dinghied by.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The sails are off. The engine oil and transmission fluid has been sampled and we\u2019ll send it out for analysis, as it will tell what kind of wear is happening in the motor and gearbox. The oil and oil filter have been changed. The rear of our enclosure has been templated so Marcia can modify them to fit better – they don\u2019t fit because we added the davits for the dinghy. We\u2019ll template the cockpit cushions tomorrow so we can put new foam in them for next season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And as much as we have enjoyed our time on the boat this year, it\u2019s time to get back. The days are shorter, and the nights are colder. Marcia wants to get back to her mattress – yes, a new boat mattress will come in the spring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As awesome as meeting new folk is, we are looking forward to being with old friends. The house will feel huge, and stuffy, I\u2019m sure. But a Michigan winter will come and Reflection needs to be prepared and put to bed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
