St. Ignace, September 3, 2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally we have some semi reliable internet connection so an update is in order.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We traveled from Thessalon to DeTour where we stayed Aug 29-Sept 2. I thought it would be fun to stay to watch the freighters pass through – and the day we arrived we could see them clearly. After that, we could only hear the booooooooops of their fog horns going off. We couldn’t see a thing there was so much fog. For three days we were socked in. We did take some nice walks, had a good whitefish sandwich at the Mainsail and went to the local fishery for some fresh white fish fillets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I can’t think of whitefish without remembering Uncle Frank. Every summer he would take Gram, Phil and I up north to Paradise. He would take us to the fishery north of Paradise and get fresh whitefish right off the boat. He’d bring them back, clean them, and fry them up (in plenty of butter) for dinner. The minute I tasted the fish I was transported to the shores of Whitefish Bay and the little log cabin we rented for the week. As far as I know, this was the only vacation Uncle Frank and Gram ever took.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We’d get packed up and leave early in the morning, see the Mackinaw Bridge in the afternoon, and arrive in the evening. During our journey, we would stop at roadside parks for snacks and breaks. Uncle Frank would calculate Miles Per Gallon, track our miles traveled gas mileage, average speed – all in his head. We ate at the Paradise A&W where the burgers were the best and their icy rootbeers were such a treat. We hardly ever had dinner out at home so this was special.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perched on the shore in our cabin we could watch the freighters making their way up Whitefish Bay to Lake Superior and back down through the Soo. I spent many happy hours swimming in Lake Superior. We went up to Whitefish Point and collected pebbles in a bucket for hours. We searched for agates and watched the birds. I still have our collection of stones out on the front porch. This is the only time I can remember my grandma donning jeans – to cover her ankles from the biting flies. I never remember being too bothered by the flies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the evening, we’d head to the dump where we watched the bears check out the day’s deliveries while some people tossed marshmallows to them from their car windows. I remember the sour smell and the excitement when the bears showed up. After it got dark, we’d head back and enjoy a fire in the fireplace if it was a chilly evening. The sunrises were exceptional and Gram always got up early to watch while she had her morning coffee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It’s funny how threads from childhood weave their way through my life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • I love Lake Superior although I’ve not gone in swimming in a long time.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • I love walking the beach barefoot looking at pretty rocks- quartz, granite, petoskey stones and beach glass.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Sunrise is a sacred. Sometimes spectacular, sometimes dramatic, sometimes gentle. With the daylight comes the beginning of another day full of possibilities, surprises, joy or challenges, heartbreaks, and trials.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Spending time with family exploring new things or just being together brings lasting joy until we are together again.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • I do love a blazing fire on chilly nights with soft smoke wafting across the room. Warm and cozy.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • The sight of the Mackinaw Bridge is always exciting – and now I’ve rode over it, sailed under it, and on Labor Day I’ll be walking across it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    Uncle Frank and Gram have been gone for many years but these threads and memories remain.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
