We arrived in Canada on July 29, and we leave tomorrow August 29. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We have visited six towns: Thessalon, Tolsmaville, Meldrum Bay, Spanish, Blind River and Gore Bay. Tolsmaville on Cockburn Island is the smallest, with a year-round population of one – and he\u2019s retiring as island caretaker. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We have had meals out in Gore Bay (poutine and fresh whitefish), Blind River (pan-fried whitefish). We have been to one brewery – Split Rail. The Independent grocery stores in Thessalon, and Gore Bay were excellent, with high quality meat and veg. Spanish and Meldrum Bay had glorified convenience stores, and we got what we needed but not so great.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Canadian boaters were amazing. Power, fishing, jet skis and dinghies would slow right down when passing. The only boats that threw up a wake had US flags.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Almost every Canadian we encountered were kind and engaging. There was one bigot with a fifty foot plus motor yacht in Gore Bay, but that\u2019s far fewer than the US.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We hit a rock at Turnbull Island, and most boaters that we told the story to said, \u2018Southern entrance?\u2019  Indeed, it\u2019s well known, and we knew about it too, but I was closer to the rocks than the chart program would tell me.  Ah well, we didn\u2019t cause any lasting damage, and I haven\u2019t felt like diving down to inspect. We\u2019ll know more at haul out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There\u2019s a number of very large Adirondack chairs in the small towns. We haven\u2019t seen any of the very large Canadians sitting in them, so we can only assume they are to make the tourists feel very small.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Favorite things: Sunrises, the lettuce that we got in Gore Bay with the roots attached wrapped in a wet paper towel – it smelled like it was fresh from the garden, and tasted like it too. Loonsong Oats Stout that even Marcia liked. The Logan Cove group. Gore Bay – we hiked up the high road, and the low road, north to Janet Head Lighthouse. Gore Bay came at a good time, as someone flipped the switch from summer to fall, and we hadn’t really had a walk in over a week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And so many chats with the people that we have met along the way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I feel like I am bracing myself to return to the US. The self-inflicted damage to US-Canada relations by the current US president is unmeasurable. Canada has no reason to trust the US government in the future, and it will probably be a generation to rebuild. This 47th president has had no respect for the Canadian people for the past few years. And quite frankly, Canada has most of the cards. Crude oil, uranium, electricity, and international Great Lakes shipping can be shutdown overnight. No one wins a trade war, and people that will bear the brunt can least afford it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The running gag in the US about Canadians saying \u2018sorry\u2019 isn\u2019t going to hold true anymore. Their elbows are up, and that blindside cross check is going to hurt a lot. Someone is going to be carried off the ice on a stretcher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sorry to get political, but it has to be said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One last thing, here in Thessalon, there’s a bridge. I’ve been calling it the pink bridge, because it’s pink. It wasn’t always pink.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
